Life at Camp Part II.

2 Corinthians 5:17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Way back when, people used to consider themselves as a Christian when others saw that they had Christ in them. Thus, others would call followers of Jesus Christians. Now, however, the meaning is a bit skewed. Those who attend church and/or believe in the ways of Christ are often labeled Christians whether or not they follow the lifestyle. They label themselves as a Christian. Those with this mindset just want to consider themselves Christians because they know it's probably where they should be in life. They don't want to take the time to continuously climb the mountain.

Take a look at this staggering fact: nine out of ten students who attend church in high school will disown the church and more importantly God by the time college graduation comes around.

Why does this happen? First, people become bored with their relationship. So many need to see someone to be in a relationship. The problem is, they're so concerned with why they don't literally see God instead of realizing that he's working all around them.

Secondly, people believe that God can’t possibly transform them. I know I see it everyday in college. There's a whole range of people. Yet, I know everyone can use God in their life; not everyone wants to appreciate that though. God can do the simplest work in us and make us a new person. It doesn't matter how "sinful" you are. Everyone messes up; just realize it's not the end of the world when you do make mistakes.

God wants to transform us with his power and might so that we might receive abundant life, that is, joy and happiness. Mike Guzzardo said, “Jesus did not give his life just so we could have an average experience with him.” It is up to us to make the most of him. Accept his love when no one else does. Accept his company when the world leaves you alone. We can witness God now...not just in heaven, but now!

Guzzardo also stated that, “[A follower of Jesus]...was evident to all by the transformation in their lives and actions.”

Life at Camp Part I

Hebrews 12:29
29 for our "God is a consuming fire."

Today I'm kicking off my series entitled "Treasuring the Abundant Life." It's based on theological ideas in "The Great Divide" by Mike Guzzardo. Expect this series to last for two to three weeks.

We’ve all heard about our spiritual walk with God compared to a mountain hiking adventure. Well, it was probably a very general story that said something like “your experience with Christ will have its ups and downs. Sometimes you’ll make a lot of progress and hike the mountain quickly while other times you’ll fall.” An interesting point that Guzzardo mentioned was that the reasons for those ups and downs are how we respond to God while we're climbing the mountain.

Sometimes, as we're going up the mountain our backpack is too heavy. In order to successfully climb, we have to take a few items out. Similarly, we should say "yes" when we have to remove things (anxieties, sins, past experiences, etc.) out of our life to allow for more room to climb and approach a climatic point in our relationship with God.

However, if we say no to taking out the items, that equates to a harder climb and eventually we have to rest on one of the campgrounds alongside the mountain. This can be a stopping point for days, months, or even years.

If we're at the campground for too long we can become too cozy which makes it harder for us to climb to the peak since we're stuck in a rut and we're convinced by Satan that we're not going to be satisfied by our relationship with God. What about that abundant life? As we climb higher and higher up the mountain, we realize that since the journey began, we're much closer to God and enjoying the extraordinary things he has to offer. The closer we get to the summit, the more we get to encounter God’s character and unbelievable freedom that he provides to us.

As for the Bible verse, it is used to remind us how much God desires to change us. When a piece of wood burns, it obviously changes its appearance completely. It's a noticeable process. While our transformation won't be as noticeable, in time you and others will be able to see a difference. God wants us to light a consuming in our hearts for him.

Believing is Seeing the Unseen.

John 6:29
29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

I'm sure you've heard the phrase "seeing is believing." Do you think that you could say "believing is seeing?" Personally, I think that "believing is seeing" is more accurate in people's day to day lives. The fact is that when we carry a perspective, we look for and find a reason to believe it. It's just a natural thing for humans to do. Have you ever noticed that when you get a new car, for example, you notice everyone else who has the same car? It is safe to say that we unconsciously focus on what's a reality in our life.

As for another example, think of math. I find algebra quite a bit easier than geometry. Why is that? Well, algebra is far more systematic than geometry. In geometry, you have to rely on theorems and postulates. I never understood why some of the theorems existed. When someone tells you "that's just the way it is," it can be hard to accept. I had to trust that the mathematicians were correct.

I think that is why many don't confide in the Lord. Too many circumstances have broken out in one's life for them to understand how he works. We're too busy believing what we see instead of the unseen - faith.

God can show you that he is real, however; you just have to ask. I see it all the time. You have to believe something to understand it. I know that once I believed in the Lord, he saved me! I had to forget trying to understand him 100 percent. I just have to believe that he exists (and it's hard not to believe!) You're always going to want proof. As far as I'm concerned, look around. What you see, all of creation, is the closest you can get to solid proof.

God, may those who don't know you learn to believe in you - the wonderful father you are. Remind us how simple you are when we try to complicate our understanding too much. Since I strongly believe that your son died on the cross and rose again, help me show others, who are searching, the way to you. In conclusion, I like to say "believing is seeing the unseen."

The perfect song for today is "All Of Creation" by MercyMe! It clearly highlights the principles of Christianity such as believing that Christ died for us.

You Belong.

Romans 12:4-5
4 Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

One of the most important things to realize as a Christian, and more importantly a follower of Jesus, is that you belong to God and God's family! You are special; if you have to say "I am somebody" to yourself several times then don't be afraid because it's the truth!

Because you belong to God and you are somebody, you belong to the church and you belong to the body of Christ as well. So many times I either hear people say "I'm a Christian...I go to church every Sunday" or "I'm a Christian, but I don't have to go to church. Those are two vast extremes, but are either of them true and relevant? I'll tell you what I've concluded.

For the first statement, I think that it is just what everyone else is saying and I don't like it. It sounds to me if you say that, then you're just going to church every week because it's right and not to gain anything from it. If anything, we all need to work on believing that we can experience God in new ways not only on Sundays but each day of the week.

As far as the second statement is concerned, I don't like that one either. Sure, you can practice your faith at home since it is about your relationship with God, but don't forget you have to go out there and serve others too. Additionally, I think being a member of a strong church body is important too; they are the ones you can lean on in time of difficulty. They are there as your second family. All in all, they are there so you can work together for God. Wouldn't you say that you have a very important job to do? You belong and you are needed!

Stumbling.

Psalm 119:165
165 Great peace have they who love your law,
and nothing can make them stumble.

Have you ever had one of those days where you are extremely clumsy? Maybe you keep running into things as if certain objects are out to get you. Sometimes it's just so bad that we feel like we need to go back to sleep and start all over again. However, when you read today's passage, a sense of relief sets in. It's almost unbelievable; you think: "no more stumbling even as I'm the clumsiest person ever?"

I might also add that this clumsy feeling that we have sometimes isn't necessarily the same as what God is talking about. Still, in both cases, physical, emotional, and mental obstacles can get in the way and cause us to stumble.

When it comes down to living life, if you know God's will, accept it, and obey it, then nothing should cause you to stumble. How do you feel knowing that God loves you and wants the best for you? Peaceful?

I saw this video and it's quite interesting. Reflect on it a little bit and don't let Satan separate you from God!

What God Doesn't Like.

Proverbs 6:16-19
16 There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

I'm sure we've all found ourselves telling others: "I'm not supposed to tell you this but..." In other words, we all gossip sometimes. God doesn't like when we do this. He wants the words that come out of our mouth to be like his would be.

According to today's scripture reading, we are not to get caught up in the worldly issues that cause us to fall over and stumble as we walk daily with Christ. Some things that were highlighted include: boasting, lying, violence, revenge, deceitfulness, and instigation. There are many other situations that can fall into this category too. Make at least a mental list of 3-5 other ways in which society tries to trip you up. Think about the ones that are sticking out like a sore thumb at this very moment in your life.

Let God know that you are aware of the areas in your walk where you're stumbling. That's where you have to start in any relationship. It's okay to admit that you mess up sometimes. Oh Lord, give us all the guidance, courage, and strength to stay away from the aforementioned temptations that you despise. May we go forth today fully cognizant of any of these ill characteristics that we possess.

The Vine and Branches.

John 15:1-10
1" I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
9 "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.

When we're on our journey to Jesus, we shouldn't do it for a pat on the back, a pep talk, a high five, or for help along the way because that means nothing. We have to depend on Jesus for help. We (the branches) need him (the vine) to grow. When we sin, it cuts off our branches and we drop to the ground and become further and further from him. We might not die in a day, but we will lie on the ground broken away from the supplier of nutrients, Jesus Christ. As branches, without Jesus, we will be closer to death without a doubt. Jesus tell us this so that we are cautious and know before it's too late.

Another significant meaning to this passage is that since Jesus is the vine (the main part of us) and we are the branches, he dwells within us and works through us. As one of his branches, we are expected to blossom with life adding more branches to the vine by proclaiming the good news to more people. Remember, Jesus died on the cross so that you are alive in him and full of life. Don't worry about growing slowly in your faith; you should expect that. When you watch a plant grow, it doesn't happen very quickly does it? Sometimes God's going to trim your hedges as you cross through difficulties. In the end, however, it's for your benefit and you will grow back even stronger.

Lord, help us have the strength to abide in you so that we can be reassured that we can obtain closeness with you throughout the voyage called life.

How Others See Our Heart.

Matthew 12:33-37
33 "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36B ut I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."

Sometimes it's sad at how much we judge other people. Sure, our claims may be true, but in reality, many times they may be false. When I think of judging someone I think of it being a first impression. However, day in and day out once you see someone speak or do something, it's easier to see what makes them tick. At that point, you can almost read them between their bumper stickers, for example, language, or how they respond to certain situations. They may have a good sense of humor, they may live a relaxing lifestyle, or they may be environmentally friendly. This form of judgment can take some investigative work or it can be completely preliminary, but is it really accurate?

Well whether or not it's accurate isn't so important. We all need to have intentions to watch what we say and do because in the end the world is going to judge you everyday. That's a fact. Of course, God's fair judgment will come another day, but that's a whole different topic. You just don't want a nasty rumor going around about you.

Jesus tells us that the words that come out of our mouth speak to others by telling them where our heart is. Are you holding a grudge? This resilience is without a doubt going to appear embedded within your language or even your temper. Then, there's always our friends who are the scapegoat; we use them to release our anger even though we're not really mad at them.

Make your tree bear good fruit and you won't have to worry about doing or saying the wrong thing. Be open to compassion, forgiveness, love, and grace toward others. If we get rid of the bad fruit, our words and actions can be more inspiring and encouraging toward one another much like Jesus would do.

How do your words and actions speak the nature of your heart to others? Give all the bad stuff to God. Lord, replace these qualities with the kind ones.

Here's the song "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" by Relient K. It's not really a good worship song, but I think it teaches an important lesson.

Don't Leave Leftovers for God.

Proverbs 3:9
9 Honor the LORD with your wealth,
with the firstfruits of all your crops;

How often do you go out to lunch and can't finish your food? Sometimes, we don't gauge our appetite right and therefore we have to take home our lunch to have for leftovers in the next day or two. While we're seemingly not wasting our lunch this way, sometimes we can because we forget that it's in the refrigerator and then we end up throwing it out. Either way, even if we do eat the food, it's arguably not as good as it was originally.

The point of today's proverb is that God should come first in everything; we must honor him in all we do. We shouldn't give him the last or the leftovers because that's just pitiful. Look at what he gives you: the first and the best. He gives all his gifts of love and grace through his one and only son Jesus Christ. It's an incredible gift that we're cheating God with if we just give him the leftovers in return. What if he did that to us? How could we possibly give him anything less than our first and very best?

Lord, thank you for all the gifts you shower on us each day. Let us freely and openly offer our hearts and best gifts to you before anything. May we be more like you. Show us the benefits of a life-long commitment to you and your kingdom work.

Even if you box up your lunch sometimes or give your dog scraps of food from the dinner table, don't give God that stuff. Give him the real deal just like he deserves!

God's Submission to Us.

John 3:16
16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

I know I've talked about this at least a couple times, and it is probably the most popular Bible verse that is heard. Is it really understood though? While I'm talking about total submission, it's a good time to bring it up again. To understand what God does for us, let's talk about salvation. Salvation that God offers us means that you can get past your identity and be placed in a relationship with him. You lose yourself and the world, and gain his love - now that's great if you ask me! Even better, you get to know who God truly is.

God gave his only son; now it's our job to proclaim God's son Jesus Christ to all of the world. He saves all from sin transforming us into a holy individual. This is all due not just to God's dedication for us, but his 100 percent submission to us.

Now is the time to surrender to the Lord. It's a commitment that should extend beyond today and be a reality for your entire life. John 3:16 is the basis of it all. If you don't understand completely how God gave himself to us , then how can you tell others what it means to give your life to God? Again, we have to give ourselves up to God just like he did for us - whole-heartedly 100 percent. If you do this, then your life will be so wrapped up in God that you'll see God everywhere!

Complete Submission.

Mark 10:28-29
28 Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!"
29 "I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel

God responded to Peter by saying the purpose of surrendering is for the sake of knowing him and the gospel. Don't twist your motivation for total submission based on the personal gains that can be achieved from it. Yes, if you stay away from sin, you are righteous with God, but that's not the right mindset to have. Think about it: how many times do we go to God to receive something from him instead of turning to God because he is God? It's like going to God, but saying "God, I want myself only, but still please do your magic and make me new again. Forget about the showcase of what God has given you. A true, total complete surrender is strongly desiring Jesus Christ.

Additionally, there are going to be days or even weeks where we have a difficult time concentrating on God 100 percent. There may be family issues or personal problems, but we cannot make excuses or else we're not really disciples of Christ.

Lastly, I want to say that total submission to God goes further than passion and devotion. It suggests that you won't give up and that you will continue to trust that God will provide. Learn to truly experience not just imagine.

Setting the Example.

2 Timothy 4:2
2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

As children of God, we are meant to set an example of his teachings. It is absolutely essential that his teachings are embedded into our DNA. Everything we do, must be a holy representation of God's message. It's okay if you're condemned and broken by sin now, you have Christ who can give you a new life at any time. Then, you must submit to God's purpose to start leading the way as an example of God's message and love.

God carries us beyond our call of duty in his kingdom in order to mold us and let us grow according to his will just as he did for his disciples. It is our job to use the energy that God gave us to share with others the truth of God. As witnesses of God, we should ultimately be a reflection of God's image in human flesh.

May God influence your life in multiple ways: when you speak and when you act. But the truth has to be genuinely taught and established in you first. Use your resources wisely, and fire away so that you are ready to preach the Word of God at any time; you never know who's going to head your way and what burdens they're going to carry on their shoulders.

No Turning Back.

John 6:67
67 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve.

It's often some of the simplest lessons that Jesus teaches that offers the most meaningful messages. I don't know if it's just because we like to think simple or not, but I do know that today's verse poses a very deep question. It is our job to always approach God willing to learn and grow. I said it recently, but there's always a risk involved. This is one of those that you're better off taking unlike trying to take the risk where you determine if you can survive a jump from a bridge.

Surprisingly, many of Jesus' disciples decided to turn around and not follow Jesus when he asked such a critical question. Sure you can be a servant with a sympathy hat on pouring your heart out to Jesus every now and then, but are you really walking with him day by day?

We can't walk with Jesus without developing a strong, intimate relationship with him. Don't look at it as something that you have to try and put forth great forth effort in order to sustain a close relationship with Christ. Instead, naturally learn to trust and depend on him. Live your life according to God. Eventually, you'll find it easier and then you can preach your journey to the world and how you accomplished it. I mentioned the risks that may await in the shadows. Hey, don't worry about them. Focus on your present relationship with the Lord. That's how you walk with Jesus.

YOU have been chosen to be with Christ because of his vast love for you! My question for you today is: will you follow or will you turn away?

This is a more modern version of the song "I Have Decided To Follow Jesus" compared to what many of you are used to hearing I'm sure. It is sung by Aaron Pelsue.

Surrender.

Galatians 2:20
20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

To become one with Christ you have to not only try and refrain from doing sinful things, but change the way in which you look at everything as well. When you are trying to learn a new concept in math or science you have to drop everything else from your mind in order to fully comprehend it, that is unless multitasking is a natural talent. The same is true when we're trying to learn how to be more like God.

God wants us to give him not just goodness, but our sins. That's all he can take from us. The good news is that God easily transforms our sin into fairness. However, we must eliminate the idea that we are everything because God is everything!

When that happens, the Holy Spirit will let us know what needs to be done next. Each step of the way we have to give up all of our insincerity. Realize that our identity is not in us, but in the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.

It's certainly not easy to surrender. Pain is going to accompany these efforts. Once people realize how they appear in the mirror to Jesus, people are in most denial - they usually notice that they disobey Christ many times. Now they're frightened and ashamed.

As you prepare to surrender, give everything that you have and everything that you are to God. You will then notice that he will do the rest, my friend!

Doing: Watch the Tongue.

James 1:26
26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

I think what's significant about today's reading is the whole religion vs. relationship idea. Surely you've heard fellow Christians claim that "it's not a religion, it's a relationship with Christ." I can validate that statement 100 percent. We can say that we believe in God, but if it's not seen in our actual relationship then it's worthless. The point is that God reaches us through his son Jesus Christ and deems us as his children. He's not just simply a God, he's our God and our father.

James says that the best way to see how our relationship with God has changed us is by recognizing the words that come out of our mouths. If you speak without much thought, then that's a sign that Christ-like behavior has not been established in your heart and mind.

However, as I say all the time, be true to yourself. If your religion, or better yet your relationship with God doesn't hold back your tongue, don't fool yourself. Just realize that your beliefs aren't influencing your mouth at this point. Ask God for help.

Take some time to reflect on your life. Since you introduced faith into your life, have you noticed that your words and actions have been kind and a reflection of Jesus? Lord, may everyone see how an honest relationship will yield to an honest transformation - much like that of Jesus.

Doing: Freedom and Rules.

James 1:25
25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.

Don't get the wrong idea about today's Bible verse. Here's how people go wrong... It's not a fortune cookie that you'd open up at your favorite Chinese restaurant. Nor is it saying that God is a genie that you can reach through the Bible. Just because you try and obey every last thing the Bible asks of us, doesn't mean God is going to grant us all of our wishes and dreams.

Here's what you should realize: You know how people always say that there is not a manual for life? Well, contrary to popular belief, I like to consider the Bible to be the closest thing to that. The Bible is a very powerful book to read because it provides one, solid direction for everyone to follow from the creator of life. He knows exactly how we are and he knows exactly what we need!

It is a blessing to live according to the words of the creator of the universe because he tells you how he expects life to be. It should be perfectly logical to live according to God's words, not just a mere promise.

How often do you resent what God tells you in his manual for life, AKA the Bible? It's not like you would ignore the warning labels on your favorite piece of technology, so why would you ignore God? Lord, may we appreciate the guidance you offer us.

Talk about powerful..watch this! It features Josh Groban's song "You Raise Me Up." I know someone needs to see this video today.

Doing: Being Proactive.

James 1:23-24
23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

I'd say on average, a person looks at themselves in the mirror for 5-10 minutes each day. When you add up that time in a week, month, or over the course of a year that can be a large sum! Men and women have different reasons for looking at the mirror. Age is also a factor in this case. Whether it's an evaluation of body image, or to pop a pimple, everyone surely looks in the mirror from time to time. Girls look in the mirror as if it's an important job to do. Guys do it more out of obsession and don't feel like it's any different than when they look at someone from across the room. They don't think they'll walk away looking any better.

James offers us comparable analogy: He claims that someone who hears the Word of God but doesn't apply any changes to their life is like a person (probably a guy) who looks at themselves in the mirror who isn't interested enough in their reflection to remember or worry about it five minutes later. Don't read the Bible just to reassure your confidence, rather expect to make changes to your life based on what you read.

God, may we willingly read your word and fix what needs to be altered in our life to best satisfy your desires. Every time you look in the mirror today, think about this, that is, if you even remember!

P.S. After a weekend and first part of the week without internet, my blog has been updated. I never intended to take a vacation from writing these past few days. I usually like to mention it ahead of time if I'm not going to post something. Therefore, I'm cheating a little and publishing four other posts today other than this even though the time stamps will still say the intended date (Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday etc.).

Doing: What It Says.

James 1:22
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says

Have you ever heard someone say: "do as I say, not as I do?" That's like someone who's teaching you how to drive says this is what's right, but I don't do that. It's okay for them to go a little bit over the speed limit, roll through the stop sign, or change lanes without a turn signal, but it definitely wasn't okay for me to do that because I was a new driver who lacked experience.

In many cases, I guess this can be true and makes some sense. However, we have to be careful when we become so systematic in what we do that we become unaware of what we should and should not do. When this happens as we're driving, we're more likely to disregard the traffic laws and not follow what the driver's book says to do setting a bad example for those watching.

Similarly, in our lives as a Christian we can take the same systematic approach. We say, "Oh the Bible says pray more, trust God, etc." so I'm good since I understand that now. Therefore, we check our daily reading off the list. However, we often just ignore this acquired knowledge when it comes to the application. At times, none of what we read is reflected in our life. Just because we listen to the Word and understand what it says, we feel accomplished without actually putting it into good use.

Finally, don't think that two wrongs make a right. Just because you did something wrong, that doesn't mean it balances out the wrong. Maybe you decided to go to church Sunday, and so that balances the fact that you ignored God yesterday. That's a terrible habit. All in all, you should listen and then do as God says!

Doing: No Way Out.

James 1:21
21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

I always despised those mazes that were in coloring books as a kid. I would get so confused and lost. Of course the goal is to get through the maze, to the other side so that you can finish it and feel accomplished. For every dead end you hit (which for me felt like every single one), it takes that much longer to complete the maze!

In the book of James, he really hopes that our goal is to follow the righteous plan and desire of God. If that's not our priority, then this book is essentially meaningless to us. Take for example, our language. If you have no control over your mouth and use God's name in vein, then obviously this book won't apply to you very much. Even our anger leads us to a dead end. The choices we make doesn't please God at all.

Today's post is talking about moral filth and evil. How do you get to the other side of that? The Word of God. Don't ignore it unless you want to be faced with countless dead ends which I'm guessing would frustrate you and just about anyone.

Many of the choices we make fail because they don't take us in the direction that we want: sometimes backwards or the opposite way. Keep God nearby so you can get through the maze!

Doing: Listening.

James 1:19-20
19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

I love the phrasing of this passage from John. We're not told to never be angry because God realizes that's impossible as a human. There's always going to be stuff that irks us. The best thing is that he offers us practical advice on how to control our anger. Instead, we're told that "everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry..." Let's break it down:

The first thing you want to is listen to God. In other words, rush into listening. This way you can get the facts. The longer you mull over something, the more you start to change the story to make it more appealing to the listener, to God, or yourself. The fact is God knows the real story, so there's no sense in putting yourself in such a critical position.

Next, be slow to speak. When we're angry, often the worst words come out of our mouth. Last November, I did a series on "taming the tongue." The book of James loves to talk about the tongue. When you're angry, control your mouth. Wait to speak until you straighten yourself out.

Now, for the hard one. Try your best to be slow to become angry. This is going to take some work. Whenever you feel angered and bothered, slow down and take it easy. Accept the fact that you're not going to make much progress when this happens. Wait for the heat to cool inside of you. Don't let anger control your life.

As you know, anger can be detrimental toward your health. What are some ways you can prevent your anger from spiraling out of control? God, direct our listening and speaking in times of anger.

God Promises: Eternal Life.

John 10:27-28
27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.

Since we know the Lord, we are fairly safe. Jesus still encourages that we remain faithful in him until we die. So, while we are safe in his arms, we are also on the brink of falling away all the time.

How can we possibly be on the brink of falling away? That's easy to answer: If we think we can survive alone without Christ or if we don't rely on his Word to guide us everyday. However, if we have learned to lean on God for understanding, then the blood of Christ will cover us in righteousness and we are very secure.

Too many have died without God because they have separated themselves from the good news of Christ. They give into the devil's schemes which claim that they don't need God by their side every second of every day.

My advice today is to be extremely careful. We can be so gullible into thinking that the devil isn't waiting for us to give in to Satan. Still, when we're weak, God's strong. His blood removes our sinful stains. When we are clumsy, he holds us tightly.

So, to end the "God promises" series, sure there are many more, but I think I mentioned the most important ones. The thing is to remember these promises and trust the Lord. These promises make it worth it to live our lives and change our worldly life into one of Christ!

Please listen to "Day Of The Lord" by Joe Romeo.

God Promises: Victory Over Death.

1 Corinthians 15:54-57
54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory."
55 "Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?" 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

I know it's not Easter or anything, but to continue with our series on God's promises, one of those includes that Jesus Christ won victory over death. Do you realize because of Jesus we have eternal life (I'll talk more about this tomorrow)? However, if it weren't for Christ, then life would carry you on a path without any spiritual entity. Essentially, your spirit would be dead.

Why is his death so victorious? Jesus sacrificed his life for you so that you're life is actually worth living! Don't get the idea that you're worthless because you're not. In fact, that's almost an insult to God if you think that. His son died for you. Without him, your sins would still be with you and cause some heavy burdens. You would be doomed and would have to deal with your punishments elsewhere other than with the fair judgment of God if it weren't for him.

When Jesus was resurrected, it proves just how mighty the act was. It wasn't just a selfish, human desire, but rather one created especially by God for the people of God. By doing this it shows that God chose to deal with his frustration from the sins that we committed against him on his own.

Give thanks to God today for the promising fact of victory over death ultimately due to Jesus Christ. May any of the lies that Satan is putting in your mind, perish and be "swallowed up in victory" as God's promises transform your mind.

Now, for an incredible rendition of "Amazing Grace." Feel free to close your eyes and sing along! Remember, our discussion about grace on Wednesday.

God Promises: Everlasting Love.

Psalm 103:17
17 But from everlasting to everlasting
the LORD's love is with those who fear him,
and his righteousness with their children's children-

How long is God's love for you? It's endless, really. It started at the beginning of time and the end is no where in sight because it's going to continue for an eternity. Just think, God loves YOU so much that he sent his only begotten son to die for YOU. God clearly saw past the sacrificial aspect and anticipated the need for your salvation.

There is no better person than to faithfully put your love into the one whose love is divine, constant, and everlasting. Even when we fail to express our love to God, God never does.

Why do we fail? We're human beings. However, I think if we're a little bit more conscious of our actions, then we will be a lot more like God. The greatest display of our love is when it's toughest to love. When things are rough, when others don't like you, you don't like them, or someone bothers you, you still should love them. Think about all the times God wouldn't love us and give up on us because we don't really love him or his children. Perhaps, you don't know God well enough. The reality is that we'll always be learning about God. Because God's love is everlasting, he keeps on loving us. He puts everything on the table and hopes that we love him in return.

On Sunday, we talked about love in church. Trevor Johnston preached his last sermon at Wesley before he leaves at the end of the month for Asbury. He had some great things to say. In fact, I'm going to outline the six principals of love as he told us:
1. Loves comes from God.
2. Love is the fruit of a relationship with God.
3. God's definition and demonstration of love is the cross.
4. God's love arouses a response.
5. Knowing the love of God leads to loving God.
6. Loving God leads to loving others.

Lord pour out your love into us, so that we are willing to love you and others. Help us realize that it's impossible to love you, without loving others; we can't fear you either or fear our growth in you.

So, we have no reason not to love God. His love surrounds us constantly.

God Promises: Sufficent Grace.

2 Corinthians 12:9
9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

I realize that I have written a devotion on this Bible verse previously (see July 31, 2009), but over the last couple weeks it has certainly been catching my eye again. In fact, I have seen this verse all over my my friends' profiles on facebook.

I've been thinking about this, and you know, grace is what allows you to survive no matter what! It doesn't matter what events unravel, who turns against you, or how many times you fail to succeed.

Is it true that when you find your pet that you love like your cat or dog, you show them love? I know I do. (It's funny that I mention this because today is my dog Buddy's birthday!) If they're not lying down in their normal "favorite" spot or they need water, it's natural to pick them up and move them or give them more water. In much of the same way, God picks us up with his grace when we're not confident in our hope or in order to heal us. Also, unlike our food or even pet food, God's grace doesn't expire. It doesn't go bad. It's non-perishable food. It's always fresh and never-ending!

How can you make God's grace appear as a reality in your life? Accept the Lord's promises; remember I'll be continuing to share more of his promises with you for the rest of the week.

It's also best that we acknowledge our own weaknesses and to mention where God has dominated during our greatest limitations. It's common to hear of people making a list of their strengths, but how often are we asked to look beyond ourselves? That is, observing when God's grace triumphs in certain situations along with other people.

"...It is by grace that one becomes a Christian, and it is by grace that one lives the Christian life." ~Kay Arthur

God Promises: Necessities.

Philippians 4:19
19 And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

The biggest misunderstanding that is associated with this promise of God is that people assume that God will supply them with everything they need along with everything they want. The necessities would include food, clothing, shelter, love, grace, and salvation through Jesus Christ which he ultimately does provide. It excludes our luxury items including technology and cars.

Those are the basics, but that list certainly doesn't account for all our needs. We should acknowledge God to add things to our needs. The light that God shines can break away the clouds which allows us to see clearly. Next, ask God to provide them (see Matthew 7:7). We can't just leave it all up to God; we need to do our best the to make the necessities a reality, but we have to work effortlessly. The best way to illustrate our work is using an example although it's somewhat indirect and irrelevant; imagine you are getting past the fear of jumping into a raging river. Sometimes life will force you to jump in the raging river in order to establish your needs You have to go to the very end, until you're squeezing for money sometimes. All you have to do is overcome your pounding heart and initial fear and let God carry you downstream to your necessities. All in all, you have to partake in the work too.

How are our needs defined? By the glorious riches of Christ. These riches can be physical, emotional, and spiritual. God knows best. He will not only satisfy your needs, but also bless you. Don't ever worry about your needs no matter how rough everything is. With that said, you can look at people around you and help them with their needs as well. Show them the love of Christ.

Thanks for reading my 550th post today! Count on God to meet your needs. He sure has for me and has enabled to understand the necessary information to write a blog post each day!

God Promises: Pain.

Job 36:15
15 But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering;
he speaks to them in their affliction.

I'm using a scripture from Job to describe pain and suffering once again today because Job teaches some very good lessons about the issue.

This week I'm going to talk about what God promises. Similarly, during the second half of last week, I introduced to you a few false promises. Pain is one of those that goes in both categories. The fact that Christians won't suffer is false, but the fact that pain is clearly evident for all is a promise.

When you're faced with the question "Why me?" it's a perfect time to turn to the teachings of Job and thus God. Here are a list of 10 general statements that I have learned with regard to suffering and pain:

1. God is good. Throughout the book of Job, God's goodness always prevails. Some seem to think that God is weak if he allows suffering to exist. However, God's power is never questioned in the book of Job.

2. Some suffering is a direct result of the devil. In the beginning of Job, it was evident that God didn't cause the problems, but Satan did.

3. Suffering isn't always a consequence of sin even though "a man reaps what he sows." God makes it evident in the New Testament that isn't always the case despite what Job's friends kept trying to tell him.

4. God does not condemn doubt and despair. In fact, Job was praised when he went to God grieving. I always mention it, but honesty is the way to go in your relationship with God.

5. God is always there. God uses his wisdom and power through the beauty of nature sometimes. He's always there even if you feel like he's not.

6. Good friends can sometimes lead you astray. Let's face it, Job's friends gave him advice that did more harm than good; they argued with his faith.

7. God wants you to be faithful. God never gave a reason for Job's suffering, instead he wanted to hear Job's response. The important thing was whether or not Job would continue to trust God when everything went haywire.

8. Your pain is not always comparable to other people's pain. There's always someone suffering more than you. Count your blessings and what you do have. I think sometimes we go through obstacles of different heights depending on what we need to learn.

9. Suffering is often a tool for growth. For Job, God used pain to help him defeat Satan. In retrospect, Job could see why God did what he did; then, he continued to trust God.

10. No matter what, we'll never have this suffering thing figured out completely. Job and his friends thought God was unfair, but they didn't see the whole picture. Furthermore, his friends believed that his pain was a result of his sins.

Job is a prime figure of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. This innocent man had some of the most intense pain recorded. Even though God didn't answer all of God's questions, God caused all his doubts to go away. God dominates in every situation!

Realize today that God doesn't promise anywhere in the Bible that we will be happy all the time. He actually promises that we'll experience seasons of challenges.
